“You
know what the chicken says.” That’s what my wife is always on
about. She hates the fact that I’m always looking for a bargain. “Cheap, cheap, cheap.” That’s what she means. She thinks I’m cheap. Maybe she’s right. After years of me complaining that all contractors were rip-offs, my wife got me to build a 24’ x 12’ deck off the back door. All went well, but before the first coat of stain was dry, she showed up with a receipt for a outdoor table and chairs she bought at the local garden center. “They’ll deliver for $50,” she said. “No way,” I said. I’ll pick them up. “In your Rav 4?” “Why not?” Well, after getting a few scratches, ones that will cost me much more than $50 to take out, we had the new furniture on the new deck. “We need an umbrella,” she said. The one I want costs about $240.” “No way,” I said. “They have one in front of the supermarket for $85.” She trembled. “Forget it, Dave. I’ve seen them. They’re brown. It would look terrible. I want a custom one that will match the furniture.” After a huge fight I was down at the supermarket picking up the brown $85 patio umbrella. She was right. After we set it up, I could see why she thought it would look terrible. It did. But I didn’t let her know I thought so. That was last year. By the end of the season, the brown color had faded, the pulley didn’t work, and the paint was chipping off the pole. I can admit it. I was wrong. We found this web site and bought a decent one. I’m out the $85 I spent last year. I’m sadder but wiser. Still a cheapskate, though. |
