In the spring of 2001, I had the afternoon to myself, so I took a book (BELOVED by Toni Morrison) to nearby Arthur’s Café to do a bit of reading. The sky was getting a little gray, so I sat down at the only table that had an umbrella. It was a good choice because after about fifteen minutes it started to sprinkle.
Then something happened that would change my life. A tall (and very good-looking) man came out of Arthur’s with a cappuccino in his hand. His dark, slightly unkempt hair was getting wetter by the second. He looked like a tall (and very good looking) wet puppy.
“Would you mind terribly if I shared your table?” he asked in a British accent.
I just smiled and invited him to sit with a gesture.
Okay, so you’ve guessed the ending. Our first child was born April 26, 2005.
I’m so glad all of Arthur’s cheap market umbrellas, except one, didn’t hold up. Little Katy wouldn’t be here otherwise.
