Most patio umbrellas come in standard sizes, the most popular being 6 foot., 7.5 foot, 9 foot, and 11 foot diameters. Of course, the exact amount of shade depends on your latitude, the season, and the changing angle of the sun, but there are basic rules of thumb for selecting the right size for your needs.

A 6 or 6.5 foot umbrella is appropriate for a 30 inch table and about two chairs.
A 7.5 foot umbrella is appropriate for a 36 inch table and two to four chairs.
A 9 foot umbrella is appropriate for a 48 inch table or four to six chairs.
An 11 foot umbrella is appropriate for a 60 inch round table or 72 inch rectangular table with six to eight chairs.

To get maximum shade benefit from your patio or garden umbrella, you might consider an umbrella with a tilt feature. This allows you to maintain a shady environment as the sun moves across the sky. There are two tilt features available: manual and auto-tilt. With an umbrella with a crank lift and auto-tilt feature, as you turn the crank handle the top of the umbrella frame tilts up to 45 degrees. A manual tilt feature allows you to position the umbrellas at either 35 or 45 degrees by pressing the inner-locking push button.

One last consideration in choosing the right umbrella is the umbrella base. Whether or not you plan to use your patio umbrella in a table or have it freestanding, it’s important to choose the right weight base for the umbrella diameter. Here is a good guide:

Umbrella set inside a table:
6 foot = 30 lb. base
7.5 foot = 30 lb. base
9 foot = 50 lb. base
11 foot = 50 lb. base

Freestanding umbrella:
6 foot = 50 lb. base
7.5 foot = 50 lb. base
9 foot = 75 lb. base
11 foot = 75 lb. base
